A simple prayer for new life

The true light
that gives light to everyone
was coming into the world.
He was in the world,
and though the world
was made through him,
the world did not recognize him.
He came to that which was his own,
but his own did not receive him.
Yet to all who did receive him,
to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become
children of God.

silence is kept

This child is the light
we have been longing for.
In one tiny hand
he grasps at Mary's fingers,
and in the other he holds
the dawn of a new world.

All glory be to Christ!
Who was,
and is,
and is to come.

The light rising around us
paints a grim and weary world
with new colour.
The life in this child
changes everything it touches.
And though I have lived
in darkness all of my life,
he has touched me.

All glory be to Christ!
For in him light has graced
darkened faces
and dawned on dead places.

A shining neon ball dropped in New York City,
but it will never raise me to new life.
The true light came down quietly,
without confetti or countdowns.
But at his touch, all will be made new.

The Word became flesh
and made his dwelling among us.
We have seen his glory,
the glory of the one and only Son,
who came from the Father,
full of grace and truth.

All glory be to Christ!

Amen
