Midweek Mindfulness ~ Christmas, 2022

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
Let us take a moment to sit and rest with Jesus, the spring of living water
We offer you a song and a simple prayer

Today we meditate on Matthew 4:15-16, Isaiah 9:1-7

A simple prayer for wonder

The people living in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land
of the shadow of death,
a light has dawned.

What was it?
Where did it go?

We get up and walk towards it,
a glow in the dark,
then a light in a simple town.
Some cry out. Angels, they say!
An aurora of light and song
arrayed in majesty:
a momentary pull of the veil.
Heaven's delight pours down
on this unexpected place.

"Glory! Glory! Glory!
Hosanna in the highest!
The Son is born!
The Word is here!
Let the very earth and hay
rejoice at God's touch!
He is on the move at last!
Let sin and grave tremble,
for to us the Christ is given!"

Heaven's radiance recedes for our sake,
but hovers near, all around.
We enter in to see this mighty Christ
that can make death tremble.

What will we find?
Such a warrior will be a sight to behold!

His cry is so soft and new,
purple brown skin wrapped up
tight in mother's arms,
exhausted wonder on her face.
He looks so ordinary.
Here is a young couple with child,
like so many others born that night.
Like any of us on our first day.
But this . . .
This is God, somehow.
In the weakest of flesh.
In the lowest of places.

silence is kept

How can this weakness save us?
Where is the warrior?
Where is the army?
Will heaven's angels fight for us?

No, she says. He is to be our great help.
His name is to be Jesus,
for God will save us.
Through Him God will do great things.
I am sure of it.

How can this be?

Some scoff and step back out
into the sprawling dark
in search of stronger lights:
something to burn away the dark.
But others linger long,
held by the gentle gaze
of mother and son.
And in that holy silence,
there is no darkness at all.

Amen
