Midweek Mindfulness ~ Advent 4, 2022

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

Today we meditate on 1 Corinthians 13 and Isaiah 9:1-7

A simple prayer for true love

By these lights we can see
the faces of brothers and sisters
around the fire.
Candles held close,
we watch the horizon.
Some whisper
that a light is coming . . .
that this dark is not all
there is or will be.

Give us eyes of hope
to read the world
for signs of your life, God.

Give us hands of peace
to fix what we have broken,
to welcome in and welcome home.

Give us hearts of joy
to weather the storms
on your sure foundation.

And give us spirits of love
to bring light into dark places,
to heal our homes,
to bless the strangers we meet,
to glorify your loving Name.

God, it is so easy
to be formed by thin loves
in this come and go,
bulk order, on demand world.
We are taught that cheap is best,
that fast is guaranteed,
that convenience is assured.
But love isn't convenient.
Love isn't fast.
Love isn't cheap.

In truth, by our lives we know
only bits and pieces of Love,
like fragments of stained glass.
Some are hand-me-downs,
some priceless treasures,
others freely given or hard won.
Precious pieces to be sure,
and they do catch your light,
but they still seem like parts
of a greater whole.

Will you teach us,
here around this fire,
how to love, God?
We want to love as you do,
not as we think we should.
Will you show us how?
It is only ---

Look! On the horizon!
