A simple prayer for light in dark places

The new year begins
in the quiet, hopeful waiting
of an expectant people.
We are a family marked
by double vision,
forever seeing the world as it is
but also as it should be.
Hope springs up in between.

Jesus, our living hope,
come into our midst!

Despair can also take root
when we find ourselves
without escape, locked in
to tired and broken paths
which promise an end
to this darkness
but never deliver us.
The way seems as dark
as it has ever been, God.

Please, we need your help!
Send us your light
to chase away the darkness,
revealing new paths.

Caught between what is
and what could be,
we strain our eyes for a sign.
But the night sky meets
our prayers with starry silence.

Silence is kept

Even if it takes a lifetime,
we will cling to your promise,
eyes on the horizon.
One day dawn will come.

In the meantime,
let us do what we can
to be a light
to those around us.
Let us lend a hand,
a meal, or a song
to our fellow travelers,
warming hearts and bodies
with the hope we long for.
Even now, in the dark,
a candle burns bright.

In your mercy, Lord,
hear our prayer.

Amen
