Today we meditate on Isaiah 5:1-7

A simple prayer for the vineyard

We walk through the rows
of broken down trellises.
Dry vines crunch underfoot
blowing across once rich soil.
Sagging, rusted wire
wilts in a dry wind
once laden with rain

But no more

Where are the grapes
that used to fill these fields?
We remember old harvest times
when the winepress overflowed,
when the laborers were many,
when the fields lay gilded
by fruit and vine and rain.

But no more

The watchtower is broken down,
its timbers rotted away.
No one climbs its height anymore,
where we once stood guard.

But no more

The walls have crumbled and fallen,
stone by stone, the mortar all chipped away.
The boundary lines have been removed;
nothing divides, nothing marks.
The vineyard stands open and empty.
