A simple prayer for the Spirit of Truth

Come, Holy Spirit, come.
Spirit of Truth and Wisdom,
the One who brooded over the waters
at the very beginning . . .
who wove the earth into being,
from highest peak to lowest vale . . .
who lit the fire at the centre
of this holy community . . .
Come, Holy Spirit, come.

The world does not know You,
though You are always near,
always breathing out Life.
You evade the eye
and slip through our grasp
without ever leaving our reach,
arriving unexpectedly
and in Your own time.

But the world has no patience
for Your coy presence.
If it cannot capture You
with a microscope,
or bend You to its will,
or feed You to its political
or economic machines,
it will call You a myth.
'Only what can be consumed is real,' it sneers.

But that is not our story.
That is not our experience.
Though we cannot put You in a bottle,
we know that You are for us.
Though You move on Your own timeline,
we know that You are there
when we need You most.

Though Your wisdom contradicts our age,
we know that Your Way is best.
Though we cannot always see You,
we know that You are forever with us.
And though the earth quake,
and the mountains be cast into the heart of the sea,
still You will remain.
You will never leave us orphaned;
You are with us to the end.

Spirit of God, fall afresh on us . . .
Spirit of Truth, be our guide . . .
Spirit of Love, bind us in unity . . .
Spirit of Christ, raise us to new Life.
