A simple prayer for open eyes
Christ, our true companion,
how many times have you
met us in the midst of it all
and we had no idea it was you?
Your voice can be so gentle,
your presence so gracious,
that we don't always see you,
even when you're right beside us.
Thank you, Jesus,
for all the moments
that you have loved us
beyond our limited knowledge
and scattered awareness.
Thank you for the cups of water
from the sidelines
as we run our marathons.
Thank you for the close calls
when we found miraculous safety.
For the springs of peace, patience,
or strength when we were fading.
For words of courage or identity
when we faced down lies.
You are always within reach,
even when we are too busy,
too sad, or too closed off to take note.
You are still there.
On winding roads of confusion and change,
when we can't see the way,
You are with us.
On chilly roads of loneliness and isolation,
when we are starving for connection,
You are with us.
On the dark roads of shock and grief,
when death assails us,
You are with us.
On sunny roads of peace and ease,
when all is well,
You are with us.
Open our eyes to your abiding presence
within us and around us, Jesus.
Shine your light on our lives,
for us to see your work.
Let us feel your breath
animating our bodies,
quickening our hearts,
anointing our spirits,
guiding our minds.
Show us this week
a little more of your surrounding love,
too high to know and too deep to fathom.
Show us afresh the everyday miracle
of the Spirit of God dwelling with us.
Give us eyes to see you.
