Today we meditate on the Passion

In Him We Are Forever Free

Loud, delighted crowds have cheered,
holy priests and soldiers jeered.
Friends have gathered, bread broken,
the wine poured, blessings spoken.
An accusing devil's hiss
hidden in a traitor's kiss.
Secret ambush in the night
capturing the Lord of Light.
Angry shouts pile charges high,
call for Death to slither nigh.
Like a Lamb, He takes it all
without a word, standing tall.

Ever since our broken fall,
Death has cast its dreadful pall.
Old fangs bare, a grip of steel,
set to make a god its meal.

How precious, blood running down
tangled whip and thorny crown,
battered beams of rugged brown—
flood of Life, our sins to drown.

Earth receives her humble king,
who would walk and laugh and sing
through beloved woods and springs.
Now He is dead.

silence is kept

Who will save us now?
Our only hope has been slain.
In sorrow, we gather at the tomb.
The only one who truly loved us
will never meet our eyes again.
Who will walk with us
through this darkest night?

silence is kept

I will

Against reason, hope, or odds,
Your steady voice meets our ears.
Turn and find almighty God
Has shattered Death, scattered Fear.
A joyous hug, rush of awe . . .
The King of Life Himself is here!

There is now nothing left to keep
You from me, my beloved sheep.
All glory, keys, and power mine,
eternal Living Hope is thine.
Now at long last, the curse is broke,
as the Most High in garden spoke.
Now all the rest is victory;
For Life will now forever be.

All hail the Risen, Living One,
who was, and is, and is to come!
In Him we are forever free,
For Christ alone now holds the keys!
Come laughing heav'n, come longing earth,
to know the all surpassing worth
of this, o happiest of days,
when Christ the King of all was raised.

Amen
