Midweek Mindfulness ~ November 2nd 2022

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
Let us take a moment to sit and rest with Jesus, the spring of living water
We offer you a song and a simple prayer

Today we meditate on 2 Corinthians 9:8-12

A simple prayer for abundance

In an age of mega-farms,
of next-day delivery,
of fast fashion,
of 'super-size me'
and costco trips,
what does abundance mean?

Teach us Jesus.
Open our hearts to your vision
of the kingdom.

Do our bottomless news feeds
and infinite scrolls satisfy?
We have freedom by the gallon,
options by the dozen,
and more entertainment
than a lifetime would consume.
So why so much scarcity?

If even half the neon promises were true,
wouldn't we already have enough?
Why this urgency for the next model
if the last promised fulfillment?
Turns out scarcity has better
ad campaigns and market appeal
than simple abundance.

Free us from the clutches of this
carrot-on-a-string life, Father.
We've been sold many things,
but we can't find what we need
littered amongst yesterday's packages.
Our hands are full,
but our hearts run dry.
We come to you searching,
hoping to find it.

But you can only give us
more of yourself.
We come with need,
in the urgent shape
of this or that,
and you are delighted
to welcome us,
but your hands never offer
quite what we expect.

We wanted security,
but you offered trust in your Name.

We wanted instant happiness,
but you offered a persevering joy.

We wanted to know the future,
but you offered one step at a time.

We wanted health,
but you offered dependence.

We wanted wealth,
but you offered only what we needed.

Like manna in the desert,
you ask us to trust you
for all we need, one day at a time.

Jesus, this is hard.
Help us to trust you
with our real needs and desires.
We will try to receive
your faithful blessings
with grateful hearts
and open hands.

Help us to live freely for others
with all we have been given,
putting ourselves in a precarious
position of dependence
on our Good Good Father,
trusting that the manna

will fall again tomorrow morning.

In your mercy Lord,
hear our prayer.

Amen
