Midweek Mindfulness ~ November 16th 2022

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
Let us take a moment to sit and rest with Jesus, the spring of living water
We offer you a song and a simple prayer

Today we meditate on John 13:1-17

A simple prayer to be made clean

You approach us gently,
with towel and basin in hand,
a smile on your face.
Will we let you wash us?
But we recoil at the thought.

Surely not, Jesus!
You cannot mean
to actually wash us clean.
You are the Lord of Heaven and Earth,
not a common servant or slave.
Please get up, I can't bear it.

Unless I wash you,
you have no part with me.
Please allow me.

Perhaps we prefer a loftier Jesus,
ruling from on high,
safely going about cosmic business
far from our daily comings and goings.
A God quite pleasantly aloof,
who gives us space to send up
offerings of prayer, money, or praise,
but who knows how to keep
a respectful distance.
The thought of a Jesus
who gets in our business,
who sees the dirt and grime,
who can smell the sweat and blood
of our mundane human lives
is too much! Too close!
We recoil because we fear
the intimacy of such a touch.

What will happen if I let Jesus
get that close to me?
I don't want to find out.
It is much safer to keep Him
as an acquaintance,
or as a figurehead on high.
Put away that basin, Jesus!
I don't need it!

We want to be made well
but we fear what the Healer
will do with us or
what He will think of us
if He saw our soles.

But I already know, child.
I am here because I know,
and I love you too much
to leave you without me.
You long for joy and wholeness,
for restoration in your life.
I am that restoration.
Let me wash you.
I want to take you in
to the feast with me.
We only need to wash first.
Recoil no more!
For my touch brings life;
you need not fear it.
I am always and forever
with you for your good.

Will you let me wash you?
