Midweek Mindfulness ~ August 31st 2022

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
Let us take a moment to sit and rest with Jesus, the spring of living water
We offer you a song and a simple prayer

Today we meditate on Luke 14:1, 7-14

A simple prayer for humility

Mirror, mirror, on the wall,
who is the fairest one of all?
Who is the smartest?
Who is the funniest?
Who is the strongest
or prettiest or wealthiest?
Who has the most or the biggest,
the best or the greatest?
How we long for the answer
to resound among our peers:
me, me, me, me.

Jesus, we are slow to confess it,
but you know the reality
with a surgeon's eye and skill:
pride is firmly rooted in our hearts.

We want the best seat at the table,
the highest title, the biggest throne.
It is not enough to have enough;
we need more than our peers
to sate pride's hunger.

Drag it out by the roots, Spirit.
Sever the taproot deep within us.
We entrust our hearts to you,
our Divine Healer, for the operation.

Help us to hear you when you invite us
to the lowest place, without fame or fortune.
You draw out a plain wooden chair,
far from the throne or the spotlight,
and assure us that this is better.
Perhaps the host will move us up,
perhaps not.

Protect us from Pride's rancor
as we bear the treatment.
Pry our eyes away from ourselves
to the needs of those around us.

We find new table companions here,
so far removed from glory.
Humility sits on our left
with friendly interest,
eager to hear our story.
Simplicity, to our right,
dressed in unadorned love,
welcomes us tenderly.

Teach us their ways, Jesus.
Help us to learn their speech,
their customs and patterns.
Break our appetite for more;
only give us enough of what is good.

At a table where all crowns rust away,
only teach us by your side to stay.
That slowly we might learn to say,
not I, but you, and your humble Way.

In your mercy, Lord,
hear our prayer.

Amen
