Today we meditate on John 20:19-31

A simple prayer for times of doubt

God, it is so easy to doubt.
The woundedness of the world
challenges our hope in the resurrection
every day of the week.
How could life conquer this much death?

We believe; help our unbelief

Why should Thomas get such a bad rap?
It's no secret that we've all been in his place before.
Sometimes it's hard to believe.
Doubt seems safer,
at home in a cynical world
that laughs at faith.

We trust; help our doubt

Yet you had compassion on Thomas,
meeting his doubt and pain
with presence, reassurance, and evidence.
You did not spurn his questions,
but gave him hope.
Would you do the same for us?
Would you meet us with your resurrecting life
as you did for him?

Meet us here, in our doubts, Jesus
Resurrect our hope
Resurrect our trust
Resurrect our belief

Renew in us a spirit of childlike trust,
that we might freely leap into your arms once more,
sure of your perfect goodness.
Ever our steady protector, our faithful guide,
our loving and tender parent,
always working for our utmost good,
you are a safe place, God.

Help us to trust you again.
Heal the places our trust has been fractured
or broken by others
especially those who claim to bear your Name.

We trust; help our mistrust

Heal our jaded hearts
Cure us of suspicion
Help us to recover from how our trust
has been abused before,
that we might remember how to bring
our whole heart once more to you,
holding nothing back.

Wounded Healer,
heal us again.

Amen
