Today we meditate on Isaiah 5:1-7, Psalm 80, and Matthew 21:33-46

The One True Vine

Abundant and generous God,
what a gift You have given us!
To be workers in Your vineyard
is an honour above our station.
To create with You is a joy,
a challenge, and a calling
of awe-filled delight.

Thank you for this chance, Father.
Thank you for the skills and characters,
the hearts and experiences
by which You have shaped each of us.
That we might use our days to create
stories of Your love and hope
in this world is a beautiful gift.
A hand outstretched,
a clear truth spoken,
a hot meal given,
a heart devoted,
a mercy offered . . .
these are some of the many wonderful fruits
growing in this good vineyard.
Praise to the heart of such a Gardener!


But even in the embrace
of such bountiful Goodness,
we still easily wander away.
We end up toiling for wild grapes,
our prideful or oblivious separation from You
--the only source of Life--
stunting our growth.
For if we abandon Your Way,
and if we ignore Your Truth,
we will not find Your Life.
We will be dead on the vine,
and will rightly fall into ruin.
You alone are the true vine.
Apart from You we can do nothing that will last.

Bring us back to Your garden, Father!
Restore our feet to Your righteousness
and return our hands to Your justice,
that we might live transformed by both.
Grow in us the fruits of Your kingdom;
may it be a rich harvest this year.


In your mercy, Lord,
hear our prayer.
