A simple prayer for the scattered seed

The Gospel of Jesus comes to us
like seed freely scattered.
Your people send it far and wide
with a hopeful hand.

Grow in us, Holy Spirit.
Cultivate the new creation
throughout our lives.

Lord, defend the path
from the predations of the Enemy.
Give the people knowledge
to understand the gift of the kingdom.
And when we would miss it,
bring it to our eyes anew.

Grow in us, Holy Spirit.
Cultivate the new creation
through renewed minds.

Lord, remove or bypass
the rocks in our lives.
Give those who receive it with joy
richer soil to grow in.
The heat of our day shows no mercy,
withering anything without roots.

Grow in us, Holy Spirit.
Cultivate the new creation
through joyful foundations.

Lord, pull away the thorns,
the weeds, the alluring briars.
Our young shoots are easily strangled
by the pointed, creeping barbs
of a loud and demanding world.

Grow in us, Holy Spirit.
Cultivate the new creation
through devoted hearts.

Lord, let us be the good soil.
Let Your Word find a true home here,
springing up and digging deep,
even if other plants need pruning
or uprooting to make space for it.
Even if the whole garden must go,
let it be so for your glory.
You alone are the Gardener.
Let the Word flourish and flower.
Let kingdom roots run to Your river.
And let the fruit of Your Spirit in us
bear the seeds of that kingdom to others,
that we might become your sowers,
one part of your mighty, majestic forest.
Lord, let us be the good soil.

Grow in us, Holy Spirit.
