Today we meditate on Acts 1:4-14
A simple prayer for a baptism of fire
Wait for the gift my Father promised,
which you have heard me speak about.
For John baptized with water,
but in a few days you will be baptized
with the Holy Spirit . . .
You will receive power
when the Holy Spirit comes on you;
and you will be my witnesses
in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth.
Such was your final promise to us,
while you walked the earth in flesh.
And so we wait once more, Jesus.
We wait for your Spirit,
the greatest gift,
to be our leader and light
in dark and uncertain places.
To be our source of loving power
under the noses of corporate kings
or the terrible might of unjust laws.
Come to us, Jesus,
and continue Your life and mission
through our humble churches.
Teach us how to be Your witnesses
in a world that has forgotten You
or never known You.
If true witness will require
new spirits and new hearts,
may Your will be done in us.
You are the Gardener.
If true witness will require
new ways of gathering or being together,
new songs or new places,
may Your will be done in us.
You are the Singer.
If true witness will require
going, leaving, or stepping out,
coming, finding, or stepping in,
may Your will be done in us.
You are the Shepherd.
We live for Your glory,
Your kingdom and mission.
And so we wait, Jesus,
for the fire that will remake or consume
our personal missions for our own glory
or the building of our own little kingdoms,
and kindle Your great heart once more
at the centre of Your Church.
O, how we need You to come again.
Let Your Spirit fall anew!
