Laying Aside

Lord Christ, help me to have the courage and humility
to name my burdens
and lay them down
so that I am light to walk across the water
to where you beckon me.

My pride,
armouring me,
making me defend my dignity
through justifications, explanations,
recriminations,
I name it
and lay it down.

The memory of hurt and insult
and slanders
driving me to lash out,
to seek redress,
I name it
and lay it down.

My antagonism against those
whose actions, differences, presence,
threaten my comfort and security,
I name it
and lay it down.

My fear,
of unsolved questions,
of the unknown,
of fear itself,
I name it
and lay it down

My grief
at my loss,
which makes me dwell on moments that cannot return,
which churns my stomach with anguish.
I name it
and lay it down.

The worry I have
for those I love
and whom I cannot help at the present time.
I name it
and lay it down.

My confusion, my guilt, my self-doubts,
which sap me of energy
and render me
rudderless,
I name it
and lay them down.

I do not need these burdens,
but I have got used to carrying them,
have forgotten what it is to be light.

Beckon me to Lightness of being,
for you to show me it is not unbearable.
Only so I can close up the distance.
Only so I can walk on water.

It is so.

Blessed are You, Lord Christ,
who makes heavy burdens light.
