Midweek Mindfulness ~ February 8th, 2023

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
Let us take a moment to sit and rest with Jesus, the spring of living water
We offer you a song and a simple prayer

Today we meditate on Matthew 5:13-20 and Isaiah 58

A simple prayer for everyday righteousness

How easy it is
to light a candle on a stand
each Sunday morning
and bask in its gentle glow.

How much harder
to bring that light
out of our chapel
and into our lives,
to light up dark streets,
broken hearts, and
bleak futures with
everyday righteousness.

We know that this
is what we're meant for,
but Lord, it is much harder.
Where do we even begin?

Isaiah is here to guide us,
to poke and to prod us
with the specifics of what Jesus
meant by salt and light.
This is what the light of God
looks like in a city, Isaiah says.
Freedom for those oppressed
by unjust companies, politics,
theologies, or powers.
Abundance for the starving in our city.
Real Shelter for those living in tents
through a bitter winter.
Clothing for those with none,
who go cold while we
organize walk-in closets.
Dignity for the outcast,
our brother or sister
we pass on the street
with averted eyes.

If we did this in Kitchener,
our light would break forth
like the dawn for all to see!

Truth and Goodness
in our dealings with one another,
not suspicion, slander, or blame.
Food for the hungry and
Healing for the sick.
Imagine if Kitchener was
touched by such vibrant life.
It would be radiant with God.

We want that, God,
even if it sounds like a fool's hope.
Keep the calluses on our hearts
from dismissing the expectant
power of your kingdom,
so ready to pour in.

If we did these things,
we would call and You would answer.
You would give us the Water of Life.
You would walk with us and bless us.
You would rebuild our broken walls
and restore lost generations.

We can only imagine the wonders
you would work through us,
if only we were willing
to bring our lights
out of the chapel.

In your mercy, Lord,
hear our prayer.

Amen
